Face Ghost

I have faith in us if we don't self destruct.

People claim to want “real” bands. They’re “not looking for manufactured shit anymore.” They want you to be yourself and be a human, but they really don’t They want you to be their view of what they think you are. What’s different about bands like TWY and SYG is that we really are ourselves for better or worse and sometimes it’s for worse. The day my girlfriend flew home from Warped Tour, I checked my phone during our signing because I had a text and wanted to be sure her flight wasn’t cancelled or something. Someone twittered at me saying that I was a dick for doing that and that I should “remember where I came from” and “stay real.” But I was being real. The real me says “make sure your girlfriend is ok.” What that girl on twitter meant was, “be the version of you that I want you to be.” People championed SYG for being a “real” band but as soon as Matt says something that’s real that people don’t agree with, he’s being unprofessional. It’s one way or the other. You can’t have both. We can be robots and we can respond to everything the way people want and be professional, or we can be ourselves and sometimes you’re not going to like it because we’re humans and we have differing opinions and emotions and sometimes, like everyone else, (gasp) we’re assholes. I love and respect Thomas. He’s a good friend and has every right to write a bad review of anything. I also love and respect Matt and he also has the right to be an asshole about some things. People saying that they don’t support his band or lost respect for him because he did something that you feel is asshole-ish perpetuates the idea that “fake” bands are doing it right because they don’t lose fans when they express themselves. By being ourselves, eventually we’re all dooming our “careers” because people turn on you for being yourself and they do it fast. You’re showing us that you want robots. Right down the center. Smiley, happy answers to everything. And if that’s what you want, fine. We can do that, but don’t tell us you want humanity when you really don’t
